Frequently Asked Questions

Below should help answer any questions you have! Anything else pop me message...

Can I learn on a piano or keyboard?

You don't have to have a big piano, many people begin learning on a smaller keyboard. This is also better if you are just beginning as the cost is much less with a smaller keyboard.

What age can I learn piano?

I have taught students as young as 4 and as old as 90. There is no ideal age people just learn at different paces. Younger ones aren't able to concentrate for as long so shorter lessons suit better. But they can still learn.

Can I have lessons in my own home?

Yes! I offer lessons in your own home, if that is where you'd feel more comfortable or you are unable to travel to me we can make this work.

Do I need to have a piano at home?

You wouldn't be able to practice at home without a piano however, there is still lots of theory you can practice. There is no rush into buying a piano or keyboard when you begin. If you are after something more affordable check facebook marketplace for any keyboards being rehomed.

What kind of music can I learn?

Anything! There are so many genres of music and all can be played on piano so find your favourite and we can get learning.

How frequently should I have lessons?

Have lessons as little or as much as you like! Most will have lessons weekly. If you're really keen you could have 2 lessons a week and if you'd rather lessons fortnightly or monthly this is also okay.

Do I need to be able to read music?

You'll learn music theory as the lessons progress, there is no need for previous knowledge. I also offer music theory tutoring, this can help support your playing and understanding of music and piano.

Does it matter if my child doesn't practice?

So many parents come along to lesson with the same statement...'I can't get him/her to practice at home at all!'. This is very common. At a young age children's attention span and patience is low. You won't find them sat behind the keys an hour a day. Please don't worry about this.

It is always good to encourage them and there are many ways to support this, whether it be getting an egg timer and star chart so they can earn rewards every time they practice. Try rephrasing what you ask them. Instead of 'You need to go and practice' try 'Can you show me what you've learnt' or 'Can you teach me something?'.
